Subject: Crossing-boundaries PhD - readvertisement

We are re-advertising a PhD position on boundary-crossing, with an empirical focus on 'transitional waters' in Scotland. Transitional (i.e. coastal) waters have environmental, economic, and social significance: for example they are the sites of major cities and ports, and they are subject to multiple planning and policy requirements that overlap at local, national, and European scales. Thus in any one place, decision-making must encompass multiple sectors, stakeholders and policy targets. This entails crossing multiple 'boundaries' - not just administrative boundaries - but boundaries between disciplines, sectors, knowledge and interests. The student will work with the supervisors to choose which aspects of boundary-crossing to focus on. It is anticipated that the PhD will provide a critical and theoretical contribution to concepts of boundary-crossing, adaptive management, and knowledge co-production, and will also provide practical insights for the management of transitional waters.

The PhD will be jointly supervised by Dr Karen Alexander (Scottish Association for Marine Sciences), Dr Kerry Waylen (James Hutton Institute) and Dr Tavis Potts (University of Aberdeen).
Funding is via a 4-year scholarship provided by the Hydronation initiative in line with the current Research Councils UK doctoral stipend levels and indicative fees. Hydro Nation Scholarships are awarded on a competitive merit, but good quality applicants will have a good chance of obtaining this.

Please circulate as widely as possible. Please note that this is a re-advertisement: If you are interested in this studentship please reply to me as soon as possible, and by 20th January.
Best wishes
Kerry
