The Institute for Ecological Economics cordially invites you to discuss sustainability and development in Africa with Dr. Henning Melber on December 15, 2015 at 14:15 in room D4.3.106. Dr. Melber is Director Emeritus of The Dag Hammarskjöld Foundation in Uppsala/Sweden and Extraordinary Professor at the universities in Pretoria and Bloemfontein in South Africa. He has published extensively in English and German on politics, policy, development, ethics and mediation. He is a member of the Civil Society reflection Group on Global Development Perspectives (https://www.reflectiongroup.org/).

Beyond Basic Needs:
Perspectives on Sustainability and Development in Africa

Perceptions on the African continent often promote images of poverty, war and wildlife. More recently, the erstwhile "hopeless continent" has also been dubbed the "continent of hope". But the question remains, for whose hope - and gains?

The short-lived resource boom of the beginning 21st century and the new expansion into the continent by several of the emerging global players were mainly reproducing old wine in new bottles. The shift from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at a closer look seems less of a paradigm shift than we are made to believe.

This lecture takes a critical look at the notions of basic needs, sustainability and development on the background of recent tendencies on the African continent. It seeks to explore the scope and limitations of the trajectories currently visible. To which extent are the socio-economic and political aspects of present developments in Africa indeed a promising sign of true social progress and for the benefit of whom?
