Workshop
25 years of Democratic Freedom. What is left from Charter 77 and the 
Velvet Revolution?

2014 marked the 25th anniversary of a series of revolutions in Central 
and Eastern Europe that have changed the landscape of European politics 
more significantly than any other event after the Second World War. In 
Czechoslovakia (later Czech Republic), the new democratic and civil 
freedoms seemed like the belated fulfillment of the visions of Prague 
Spring and Charter 77. Later, however, the moral pathos of 
“non-political politics” also turned out to be a burden for the 
well-functioning of political and democratic routines. This might be one 
explanation as to why the process of “normalization” following the 
revolutionary enthusiasm sometimes seemed to be more difficult for the 
Czech Republic than for its neighboring countries. This panel will 
reflect upon the fascinating, yet ambivalent intellectual legacy of 
dissident thinking and its meaning today, when the triumph of democracy 
seems to have been given way to profound challenges to democracy.

Crises in the Post-Soviet Space: the Case of the Ukraine

Explanations for the current crisis in Ukraine have mostly disregarded 
contemporary history. Similar to other former members of the Soviet 
Union, the country has been faced with profound challenges since 1991; 
the dissolution of the Soviet Union and Ukraine’s independence formed 
the initial framework for an extensive political and economic 
transition, accompanied by a contested nation-building process, the 
establishment of democratic institutions and the implementation of a 
capitalist system. The conference seeks to examine the ongoing crisis in 
the context of these developments. It scrutinizes the effects of the 
dissolution of the Soviet Union as well as of Ukraine’s independence, 
and examines its path from a planned economy towards capitalism and 
respective socio-economic changes. Participants will also consider the 
present situation and its international dimension. The event gathers an 
international and interdisciplinary group of researchers from political 
science, history, and economy, as well as practitioners from 
international organizations and the media.

Crisis and Solidarity in European History. 9th Annual Graduate 
Conference in European History (GRACEH)

Crises are periods of rapid change and upheaval, which generate a 
variety of options that should not be interpreted in hindsight as fixed 
outcomes but rather should be viewed as open-ended processes. At this 
conference we welcome contributions about crises occurring in 
international relations, domestic politics and economic systems. The 
second key term is solidarity as one possible response to crises. 
Solidarity can be based on a horizontal network of support on a 
private/personal or public/institutional level. Therefore crises can 
also strengthen communities of solidarity or provoke new forms thereof. 
The conference intends to take a historical approach to these phenomena 
and to highlight different forms of solidarity in European history. 
Methodological approaches include macro-level and micro-level analysis 
combining the perspective of crisis and solidarity. The conference also 
encourages approaches such as discourse and social network analysis and 
applications with a focus on the role of the media concerning both the 
perception of crises and actions of solidarity.

Gegenwartsliteratur in Ost- und Mitteleuropa
Dokumentationsstelle für ost- und mitteleuropäische Literatur

Literaturwissenschaftliches Arbeiten steht im Vordergrund dieses 
Workshops im Sommersemester 2015. Wie analysiere ich einen literarischen 
Text? Wie kann ich ihn in die europäische Gegenwarts­literatur 
einordnen? Worin liegt seine Literarizität? Was ist Poetik? 
Mehrsprachigkeit von Beiträgen (Russisch, Polnisch, Bosnisch oder 
Ungarisch) ist willkommen. Der Besuch ist unentgeltlich.

Die Tage der Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie stellen eine wichtige 
internationale Austausch- und Vernetzungs­plattform dar, die Kultur- und 
Sozialanthropologinnen und -anthropologen aus Wissenschaft und Praxis 
sowie Nachwuchs­wissenschafter­innen und Nachwuchs­wissenschafter 
verbindet. Im Rahmen der Tagung werden aktuelle Forschungs­ergebnisse 
und Projekte präsentiert und diskutiert. Die 21 Workshops umfassen eine 
große Bandbreite an thematischen und theoretischen Perspektiven. Des 
Weiteren finden während der Tagung drei begleitende Foto- und 
Poster­austellungen statt. Die Anmeldung eines Vortrages erfolgt direkt 
bei den entsprechenden Workshop-KoordinatorInnen mit Titel des Vortrages 
und einem Abstract von max. 300 Wörtern.

Österreichisches Kooperationsbüro in Wissenschaft, Bildung und Kultur in 
Sarajevo

On February 7, 2014, a fire destroyed many documents in the 
Bosnian-Herzegovinian Archive in Sarajevo, i.p. the period of 
Austro-Hungarian administration (1878-1918). About 300 boxes were 
destroyed in a way that they cannot longer be restored. In the past 
years, researchers have copied or digitalized thousands of these 
documents which have therefore survived on computers and in offices. The 
project aims to collect these copies. In the previous months researchers 
from many countries have already sent hundreds of them. But our hope is 
to hand over the archive many, many more.
