The Philosophies and Policies of Responsible Research and Innovation Place: Campus WU, TC.1.02Time: 12 May at 5:30 p.m.  In his talk, Prof. Roger Strand will present the philosophical origins of the Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) concept as well as the current policy battles over its content and importance. The concept of RRI came to prominence when EU's 8th framework programme for research funding, Horizon 2020, endorsed it as a "cross-cutting principle" potentially to be implemented in all parts of Horizon 2020. Late 2014, an international conference on the science-society interface culminated with so-called Rome Declaration on RRI, see http://ec.europa.eu/research/swafs/pdf/rome_declaration_RRI_final_21_November.pdf Roger Strand is Professor of "Wissenschaftstheorie" at Center for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities, University of Bergen, Norway. His research includes post-normal science and issues of uncertainty and complexity, in particular with respect to ethical and social aspects of new and emerging technologies, (e.g., www.technolife.no and www.epinet.no). In 2014, he chaired an expert group on "Indicators for RRI" for the European Commission.
