AbouttheConference:
Sustainabilityhasemergedasan overarching concernforthetransportation
sector around theworld.Thisinternationalconferencesupported
bytheTransportation Research Board ofthe NationalAcademieswillpresent
thought-provoking examplesofsustainabilitythinking, analysis and
practice inthetransportationfield. The conferencewill especially promote
approaches thatadopt aholistic viewonsustainabilitycombining the
keydimensionsof sustainability(economic,social, andenvironmental)and
addressingpresent and future needs. It will aim
tostimulatedebateonhowsuch aviewcanbe consolidated intopractice and
research. Acentral aimis to explorewaystoward institutionalizing
sustainablepracticesglobally.
The program will includetechnical discussionsonsustainability concepts,
tools and practicesas well asplenarysessionsthatwill include leading
subject matter experts. Practitioners representinggovernment,private
sector,academia, business,and
non-profitorganizationsfromaroundtheworldas well astheUnited States
areinvited to participatein this conference.
TopicsforPresentationsandPosters:
This callinvitessubmissionsof abstracts
tobeconsideredforpresentationsduring plenarysessions,
break-outsessionsand for the student poster session. Presentations
areinvited inthefollowing three topic areasas they
relatetosustainabilityin transportation:
1.Global,International,andCross-BorderChallenges andInitiatives--
Presentations could explore trade,globaleconomy,andinternational issues,
as theyrelatetotransportation sustainability.Othertopics could
includeglobal sustainability issues arising ininternationalair
travel;maritimetravel(especially freight), andbordercrossings.
Examplesofissues thatmightbe addressed include more efficientintermodal
connectionsand logistics; equityissues arising fromtransportationalong
internationaltrade corridors;etc.
2.Policies,Programs, Projects,and Institutional Approaches--
Presentations could focusonlocal, regional, and national cases
highlighting practices, issues andsuccesses. We areseekingcase studies
that focusonsustainabiltyissues and approachesthat havecommon
application andthat address allthreepillarsof sustainabilty. Thesecase
studiescouldidentify challenges ininstitutionalizing sustainability
intotransportationsystems. The presentationscouldprovide
anopportunitytoshowcase and discussthe development andimplementation
ofsolutions thatcouldbe applied inmultiplecountries.
/3. /Assessment,Monitoring,and Evaluation--
Moving fromtheorytopracticerequirestools,data andmeasures that canassess
sustainabilityintransportation.Presentations onthis
topicmightincludediscussionsofwhatneeds tobe measured and howthemeasures
canbeapplied, including data,resources,andtoolsthat have
beenused,aswellasassessment andmonitoring frameworksand lessons learned.

·Identify which ofthethreetopic areasthepresentation will address;
·Account for howa holisticapproach tosustainabilityis adopted inthe
analysisorpracticetobepresented;as aminimumhowthe three
pillarsofsustainable development(economic, social andenvironmental),

·Demonstrate thattheworktobepresented is sufficientlyadvanced beyond
