If you want to get a headstart thinking about the data you'd like to work with in class, a few easy-to-access libraries of GIS data. The software we are working with is GeoDa, which uses .shp files ('shape').
GeoDa has some data available for download from their research projects plus all the datasets used in their tutorials:
http://geodacenter.asu.edu/datalist
Vienna has an open data project. Lots of transport system and city services data here:
https://open.wien.at/site/datenkatalog/
US EPA has a ton of environmental data in the data.gov catalog:
http://catalog.data.gov/dataset
For more US data, most states now have a GIS clearinghouse where all sorts of public datasets are available on demographics, economics, environment, transport, public services etc.
Have fun kids and see you after the break!
Ann
